විශේෂ දිනයන්

Right there by my side, you were

When hundreds of hard stones,
Rolled across my paths,
Right there by my side,
You were there to heal my wounds.
When hundreds and thousand times,
I hurt you, disobeying your words,
Right there by my side,
You were there to colour my dreams.
When hundred, thousand, million thoughts,
Pictured me numerous ways,
Right there by my side,
You were there to select the goods.

There is a relationship in this mortal life, that effortlessly conquers many of the known relationships on this Earth. Feeling confused? Do not scratch your head too much as that extraordinary relationship is none other than that with your father, which is truly priceless in terms of his countless love, dedication, and devotion towards his family. While growing up, every little child needs a superhero. Walk down your memory lane a little, then you could find your loving father. Father is the symbol of strength that binds the entire family together. He is a person who works tirelessly to support the family economically as well as morally. So, to appreciate and honour all the fathers in the world for their unpaid service done on behalf of their families, Father’s day is celebrated all over the world.

What is the origin of Father’s day?

On the 5th of July, 1908, a West Virginia church sponsored the United State’s first event that was recorded explicitly, to honour fathers. It was a Sunday sermon, for commemorating the 362 who had died in the bygone December from the explosions at the Fairmount Coal Company mines in Monongah, but it was a one-time commemoration and not an annual one.

The next year, a Spokane, Washington woman named Sonora Smart Dodd, one of six children raised by a widower, tried to establish an event that is equivalent to Mother’s day for male parents. She went to local churches, the YMCA and then met shopkeepers and government officers to drum up the support for her idea, and finally, she was successful. Washington State celebrated the United State’s first statewide father’s day on the 19th of June, 1910. Today, the day of honouring fathers is celebrated in the United States on the third Sunday of June. Whilst countries across the world celebrate father’s day on a variety of days, Sri Lanka celebrates father’s day on the third Sunday of June every year, along with the US.

Make a promise on this special day

Father’s day is also a normal day. What about the other 364 days of the year? Do you stay not loving your dad on those days? Although there is a special day to celebrate our fathers if I am correct, inside our hearts, the entire 365 days must be father’s day for us. The pathetic view of the picture is that while they are growing up, most youngsters tend to forget their fathers. Just have a look at all the suffering grandfathers who reside in elders’ homes all over the country. It is quite heart-breaking to remind the facts that the children neglect the responsibility to take care of their loving parents in their turn.

So, on this special day, try to make a promise to yourself that you will respect, love, and care for your dearest father in every possible movement until his last breath. In this journey of life, each and every one of us will encounter numerous kinds of people. They may appear in different faces and offer you various promises. These people may alter their affiliations towards us owing to numerous situations in life. Yet a father will never ever abandon his children and family in whatever hardships he has to face. He will remain as a protecting shield of the family in both fair and fierce weather.
