Rotaract is a Rotary-sponsored service club for young men and women aged between 18 and 30. Clubs are usually community-based or university-based and are sponsored by a local Rotary club making them true “partners in service” and integral members of the Rotary family.
Through the Rotaract program, young adults not only augment their knowledge and skills, but also address the physical and social needs of their communities while promoting international understanding and peace through a framework of friendship and service.
‘Rotaract’ was officially inaugurated in January 1968 under RI President Luther Hodges. On 13 March 1968, the Rotaract Club of the University of North Carolina, sponsored by the Rotary Club of North Charlotte, North Carolina, USA, was the first Rotaract club to receive its official charter. Though this club was recognised as the first Rotaract club, Rotarians have been sponsoring similar organizations for young adults since the early 1920s.
As one of the most significant and fastest-growing programs of Rotary service, with more than 8,000 Rotaract clubs in some 155 countries and geographic areas, Rotaract has become a worldwide phenomenon.
The Rotaract club of the Faculty of Science, University of Colombo was established in the year 2004, with the main objective of providing valuable services to uplift the standards of the students of the faculty and also to contribute to the community at every possible occasion. The club has been actively participating in the events of the Rotaract District 3220 and presently has 70 members. The club is sponsored by the Rotary club of Colombo Downtown.
For nearly 10 years the club has been growing steadily into one of the most active and impressive clubs in the Country. Our projects include personality development programs, industrial awareness and skill development workshops, and events to build relationships with international community etc. mainly targeting university students. But the club is heavily involved in community services as well. Our public service projects are held in large scale because we believe that making the world a better place starts with a commitment to service above self.
