Edgar Allan Poe(19.01.1809-07.10.1849)
Somebody believes that creativity is an inborn ability. Why do they say that? Because some artists’ creativity is so amazing. Sometimes we wonder, where do these thoughts come from..?
‘Edgar Allan Poe’ is an artist of such extraordinary creativity. This is an article, made by Colombo Beacon for this remarkable birthday celebration.
Edgar Allan Poe was born in 1809 like a day today in Boston Massachusetts USA. Poe’s mother was ‘Elizabeth Arnold Poe’ who was an English born actress and Poe’s father was ‘David Poe’ who was also an actor in Baltimore.
So, from an early age he inherited art from his parents. After his mother died in 1811, he was taken into the home of John Allan in Richmond. And then he was later taken to England. However, he tried to continue his classical Education in Richmond. In 1826 he attended the university of Virginia but at that time he was addicted to gambling. It cost him his Higher Education. Then Poe returned to Richmond to engage with his sweetheart ‘Sarah’(Elmira Royster)
Creativity is undefined and no one can hide it. Poe is one of the people who has proved it.
He went to Boston and published a pamphlet of youthful Byronic poems, Tamerlane and other poems in 1827. However poverty forced him to join the army, not from his real name, but under the name of ‘Edgar A.Perry’.Even so, John Allan could help him to get an appointment to the US military academy at west point.
Before joining the US military academy, Poe published a new volume at Baltimore.’They are,’Al Aaraaf’,’Minor Poems’ and ’Tamerlane’
He couldn’t complete the military course successfully, because he was often absent from classes. Then he went to New York and bought a volume of books that had been written by famous poets. Then he returned to Baltimore, where he began to write stories. In 1835 he became an editor of southern literary messenger in Richmond. Here he made a name as a ‘critical reviewer’ and this generated the foundation of his mystery writing career. Then he got married to his young cousin ‘ Virginia Clemm’.
”Hello. I’m Ray Bradbury, best described as a friend of Edgar Allan Poe’s. And Poe, he was a friend of the Gothic novel. That was his rote system. Gothic, therefore, equals medieval, and medieval–to the rational mind of the eighteenth century–meant the age of unreason, of superstition, of belief in the supernatural.”
This is the science fiction writer, Ray Bradbury’s views on Edgar Allan Poe’s “The fall of the House of Usher” book.
Because of the drinking, Poe was again dismissed from his job in Richmond. Also, he was a drug addict. But according to medical testimony, he could refresh his mind & brain. So in 1838, he published a long prose narrative, while he was in New York. It was the narrative of ‘Arthur Gordon Pym’.
Then he became a co-editor in Philadelphia and published ‘The fall of the house of usher’.This was one of the turning points of his life.
Poe focuses more on deeper feelings and emotions. Moreover Poe has done a much better job on getting the reader to feel and understand him using psychotic elements to the characters and plot.
These are the famous and greatest creations of Edgar Allan Poe:
“Annabel Lee” “Eleonora” “Eureka” “Lenore” “Ligeia” “MS. Found in a Bottle” “Metzengerstein” “Morella” “Tamerlane, and Other Poems” “The Bells” “The Black Cat” “The Cask of Amontillado” “The Fall of the House of Usher” “The Masque of the Red Death” “The Mystery of Marie Roget” “The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym” “The Pit and the Pendulum” “The Premature Burial” “The Purloined Letter” “The Raven” “The Tell-Tale Heart” “The Valley of Unrest” “To Helen” “To One in Paradise” “Ulalume”
Edgar Allan Poe was world-famous as a detective & gothic writer and “The Raven” is the best witness for that identification.
Poe was a ‘creative all rounder’. As a short story writer, poetry, critical reviewer and editor, Poe could serve for American Literature well. He had plenty of abilities to build up his own writing career brilliantly.
In 1910, he was nominated for ‘ Hall of fame’ and received the ‘Hall Of Fame For Great Americans’ Award.
This marvellous artist passed away on the 7th of October in 1849. He was barely 40 years old at the time.
Finally, I would like to end this by wishing him to rest in peace on his birthday.
“No matter how challenging it is , Life can find it’s suits! “
This is the message which Poe’s life story gives us…
