The Welsh Dragon

In the period between 2011 and 2013, a young footballer emerged as one of the fastest players in the history of football. He was often called “The Welsh Dragon” by his fans from Tottenham Football Club and his country Wales. This is the story of him who shined like Ronaldo, Messi and Neymar, but for a while before his career was ruined by injuries.

Gareth Frank Bale was born on the 16th of July 1989 in Cardiff, Wales. His father, Frank was a school caretaker while his mother Debbie was an operation manager. Bale attended Whitchurch High School in Cardiff. He was a great athlete and Hockey player at his school; alongside future Welsh Rugby national team captain Sam Warburton he played football. At the age of 14, Gareth could run a 100 meter sprint in 11.4 seconds. When Bale was 9 years old Southampton football club noticed his skills while he was playing in six a side football tournament with his first club, Cardiff Civil Service. Fellow Welshman and Manchester United player, Ryan Giggs was his childhood role model in football.

Bale started his senior career at Southampton Football Club as a left-back in 2006 where he played 40 games for the club and scored 5 goals. In 2007 he joined the famous North London Club Tottenham Hotspur where he scored 42 goals in 146 games for them. He played as a winger and an attacking midfielder at Tottenham. He was first noticed in his senior career in October 2010, when he scored a hat-trick against European champions at the time, Italian club Inter Milan at San Siro Stadium in Italy, in a Champions League game. When Tottenham was already 4-0 down inside the first 35 minutes, Bale scored a hat-trick, but his team lost 4-3 at the end.  Bale scored his first  Premier League hat-trick in a 4-0 away win on boxing day against Aston Villa in 2012. On the 28th of April 2013, Bale won PFA player’s player of the year and Young player of the year after his excellent showing in the 2012-13 Premier League season. A week later on the 2nd of May 2013, he was awarded the FWA Footballer of the year award from the Football Writers Association.

1st of September 2013 marked as a turning point of his senior career. Bale was signed by the famous Spanish club, Real Madrid for 85.3 Euro millions, as the club’s biggest signing at the time. His first half of the very first season with Real Madrid was ruined by injuries but yet he managed to shine, winning two trophies with the club at the end of the season. Bale scored the winning goal against Barcelona in Spanish Cup final 2014 and scored against Atletico Madrid in the Champions League final 2014 which secured Real Madrid their 10th European Championship. Since the first season, Bale has become the main part of Real Madrid’s attack. Bale’s most important performance was when he scored twice in the Champions League final 2018 against famous English side Liverpool, where he was awarded the player of the match in the final. With Real Madrid Bale won 13 titles including 4 European Champions League titles, 2 Spanish League titles, 1 Spanish cup and Spanish super cup titles, 2 European super cup titles and 3 Fifa club world cup titles. He has scored 105 goals and provided 68 assists for Real Madrid so far in 251 games.

Bale is representing Wales on a national level where he made his debut in 2006 and has scored 33 goals in 96 games so far. Bale also represented the Great Britain football team in the 2012 London Olympics.

Outside football, Bale lives in Madrid, Spain with his fiance Emma Rhyes-Jones. They have 3 children together and got engaged on 17th July 2016. Bale is a huge Gold fan and spends most of his time playing Golf when he is not playing football. My personal view on Bale is, he has a fierce determination to succeed. He is one of the most unselfish players that I have seen and one of the best players of Real Madrid, my favourite club in the mid 2010s. He is doing charity work like helping children and the poor. He donated 1 million Euros and his wife also donated five hundred thousand Euros to fight against the Corona pandemic in Spain and Wales in 2020.

We all in the Colombo Beacon family wish Gareth Bale a very happy birthday!
