The Gavel Club of University of Colombo has organized a workshop to develop Public Speaking which would be conducted by Udara Soysa who is a Senior Law Lecturer.

When and Where?

The workshop will be conducted on Monday the 18th of May 2015 at the Department of Mathematics – Auditorium from  4:00pm to 6:00pm

Regardless of which faculty you are in – whether you’re from the Faculty of Medicine, Arts, Science, Law or Management and Finance, there will come a point in your life where public speaking will play a crucial role in the field you’re working in.

I’m a Science student and I already have the brains so why should know how to speak?

Imagine a day when it comes where you come up with an amazing theory for a research project and you’re supposed to explain it to the company that will fund your project – which doesn’t have a clue about Science, how will you do it? If you can’t explain the Science you know to the general public – someone else with better presentation skills will take your spot!

I’m CIMA qualified, have an MBA, and have a few more degrees in my hand – why should I know how to speak?

There will come a day when you have to communicate with your Employer as to why you want a promotion, a raise in salary or to propose a new idea that will benefit the company you work for. How will you do it? Can you bear to watch someone with fewer qualifications than you, who has less knowledge and ideas than you take away your place because he/she can speak better than you?

The workshop would focus on many skills which a speaker should develop. It could be a presentation, a viva, an interview or even a lecture that you may have to deliver in the future, but for any of them to be successful these skills would play a major role!

What is there for you to gain??

  • Improving Spoken English
  • Reduction of stage fear
  • Developing confidence
  • Developing eye contact
  • Developing professional speaking habits
  • A practical session on presentations

Who can come for it?

Everyone can come! So don’t be shy! There will be something for everyone to learn!
